About Joan and her dog Phoebe

Joan decided to become an artist
in the fourth grade when one day, after school, her Mom bought
her 100 sheets of drawing paper, a box of new crayons and a Nancy
Drew Mystery. Joan spent the whole afternoon reading and drawing.
That day, she fell in love with words and pictures.
She graduated with a Master's Degree
in Fine Art from Boston University and was awarded a Stoeckel
Fellowship, Yale University. Now she combines her two passions
as an author and illustrator of children's books. Her most recent
title is Miles Away From Home, an American Booksellers
Association Kids' Pick of the Lists for Spring 2001.
Joan lives with her children in
northern California. Her constant studio companion is Phoebe,
a yellow Labrador, who helps out as much as she can. Phoebe walks
Joan every morning to keep her happy and in excellent shape.
Phoebe also loves chasing squirrels, running after cats and swimming
in the pool.
While Phoebe naps, Joan writes
and illustrates poems, easy reads and picture books. Her publishers
include Harcourt Children's Books, Grolier Children's Press,
Scott Foresman- Addison Wesley, Macmillan McGraw-Hill and Scholastic.
Joan loves teaching Advanced Writing for Children at both
Santa Clara University and the Taos Institute of Art. She publishes
under Joan Cottle. However, she recently changed her name to
Joanie Cavanaugh.
